Istanbul once again showed why it is one of the most magical tango cities in the world.
The "La Ventana Tango Festival 2026" organized by Onur Kira and Tugba Bayindir brings people together from all over the globe — and that is exactly what makes this festival so special.
“La Ventana” means “the window” — and that is exactly how this festival feels: like a window into the international world of tango. People from many different countries meet here through music, dance, and emotion.
I met dancers from Canada, USA, Korea, Argentina, England, Germany and Hungary — and people I still don’t even know where they come from. Despite all cultural differences, there was instantly a shared language: Tango.
And this time, I had a very special experience:
For the first time, I met people with whom there was practically no shared spoken language. Some spoke only Turkish, others came from countries whose languages I couldn’t understand at all. We could only nod, smile, and thank each other after dancing — and yet a real connection emerged.
And surprisingly, you learn a huge amount about the other person in those moments: about how they react, their awareness, their attentiveness, and maybe even a bit about their attitude and their way of experiencing life. Perhaps even more than if you had spent the same time simply talking.
That was one of the most beautiful feelings of this festival:
making friends without saying a single word — only through music, movement, presence, and shared dance.
I would say this is once again a sign that tango is one of the most powerful languages in the world — a language that deeply connects people, transforms them, and brings them fully into the present moment.
Maybe that is exactly where tango’s magic lies:
that for a few minutes you fully open yourself to another human being — without expectations, without many words, only through presence, music, and movement. And that for a short moment, you share a piece of the journey of life together.
At the beginning, of course, many people are strangers. Some are unsure how to approach others. Some even said that the Turkish tango scene can feel a bit closed. But I believe it’s often much simpler: many people are just unsure and keep looking around, wondering who to dance with or talk to.
My personal tip:
Don’t only stand at the edge of the dance floor. The most beautiful connections often happen at the bar, in the lounge areas, or anywhere where the music is a bit softer. Just talk to people, ask where they are from, or for tips about Istanbul. From there, the most natural conversations begin — and suddenly you find new tango friends from all over the world.
The level on the dance floor was impressively high, but even more beautiful was the atmosphere between people. No competition, only shared dancing, listening, and connecting. This special energy is exactly what makes La Ventana unique.
The festival takes place at the beautiful Sofitel Istanbul Taksim — an elegant hotel in the heart of Istanbul with a view over the Bosphorus. That alone makes the trip worth it.
Among the maestros of the festival are Rodrigo Palacios & Indira Hiayes, as well as Andrés Molina & Natacha Lockwood.

It is a place where people from all over the world come together to experience something real — through music, movement, and human connection.

Istanbul hat wieder gezeigt, warum diese Stadt zu den magischsten Tango-Orten der Welt gehört.
Das laventanatangofestival.com organisiert von Onur Kira und Tugba Bayindir bringt Menschen aus allen Teilen der Welt zusammen — und genau das macht dieses Festival so besonders.
„La Ventana“ bedeutet „das Fenster“ — und genau so fühlt sich dieses Festival an: wie ein Fenster in die internationale Tangowelt. Menschen aus unterschiedlichsten Ländern begegnen sich hier durch Musik, Tanz und Emotion.
Ich habe Tänzerinnen und Tänzer aus Kanada, den USA, Korea, Argentinien, England, Deutschland und Ungarn getroffen — und Menschen, von denen ich bis heute gar nicht weiß, woher sie eigentlich kamen. Trotz der unterschiedlichen Kulturen gab es sofort diese gemeinsame Sprache: Tango.
Und für mich gab es dieses Mal noch ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis:
Zum ersten Mal habe ich Menschen getroffen, mit denen praktisch keine gemeinsame Sprache möglich war. Manche sprachen nur Türkisch, andere kamen aus Ländern, deren Sprache ich überhaupt nicht verstand. Wir konnten uns nur zunicken, anlächeln, uns nach dem Tanz bedanken — und trotzdem entstand Verbindung.
Und erstaunlicherweise hat man dabei wahnsinnig viel über den anderen gelernt: über seine Art zu reagieren, über seine Achtsamkeit, vielleicht auch ein wenig über seine Attitüde und sein Lebensgefühl. Vielleicht sogar mehr, als wenn man sich in derselben Zeit einfach nur unterhalten hätte.
Genau das war eines der schönsten Gefühle dieses Festivals.
Freunde zu finden, ohne ein einziges Wort zu wechseln. Einfach nur durch Musik, Bewegung, Präsenz und den gemeinsamen Tanz.
Ich würde sagen, das ist wieder einmal ein Zeichen dafür, dass Tango eine der intensivsten Sprachen der Welt ist. Eine Sprache, die Menschen tief verbindet, einen verändert und so stark ins gemeinsame Erleben hineinzieht, dass man vollkommen im Hier und Jetzt ankommt.
Vielleicht liegt genau darin die besondere Kraft des Tango:
dass man sich für ein paar Minuten völlig auf einen anderen Menschen einlässt — ohne Erwartungen, ohne viele Worte, nur durch Präsenz, Musik und Bewegung. Und dass man für diesen kurzen Moment ein kleines Stück Lebensweg gemeinsam geht.
Am Anfang sind sich natürlich viele Menschen fremd. Manche wissen nicht so recht, wie sie miteinander ins Gespräch kommen sollen. Einige meinten sogar, die türkische Tangoszene sei eher geschlossen. Doch ich glaube, oft ist es viel einfacher: Viele sind schlicht unsicher und schauen gleichzeitig in alle Richtungen, mit wem sie tanzen oder Kontakt aufnehmen könnten.
Mein persönlicher Tipp deshalb:
Nicht nur direkt am Rand der Tanzfläche stehen. Oft entstehen die schönsten Begegnungen an der Bar, im Lounge-Bereich oder überall dort, wo die Musik etwas leiser ist. Einfach Menschen ansprechen, fragen, woher sie kommen oder ob sie Tipps für Istanbul haben. Genau daraus entstehen oft die lockersten Gespräche — und plötzlich hat man neue Tangofreunde aus aller Welt.
Das Niveau auf der Tanzfläche war beeindruckend hoch, aber noch schöner war die Atmosphäre miteinander. Kein Konkurrenzdenken, sondern echtes gemeinsames Tanzen, Zuhören und Verbinden. Genau diese besondere Energie macht La Ventana zu etwas Einzigartigem.
Das Festival findet im wunderschönen Sofitel Istanbul Taksim statt — ein elegantes Hotel mitten im Herzen von Istanbul mit Blick auf den Bosporus. Allein dafür ist die Reise schon wertvoll.

La Ventana ist nicht einfach nur ein Festival.
Es ist ein Ort, an dem Menschen aus der ganzen Welt zusammenkommen, um gemeinsam etwas Echtes zu erleben — durch Musik, Bewegung und Begegnung.
