From Buenos Aires to Stuttgart
After their show at Tango Salon Stuttgart, I had the opportunity to sit down with Ornella Simonetto and Juan David Vargas once again.

This interview was special for me because it was not our first conversation. Included in this article is also an earlier interview I recorded during the qualification rounds of the 2025 Tango World Championship in Buenos Aires.
At that time, the results were still unknown. Yet, based on my own experience at World Championships and many years of observing the international tango scene, I already had the feeling that this couple would go very far. Their connection, musicality, stage presence, technical clarity, and shared vision stood out immediately.
Later, they confirmed that impression by reaching the podium once again.
From 7th Place to Two Bronze Medals
Their journey is inspiring.
First, they reached 7th place at the Tango World Championships.
Then they achieved 3rd place.
And then they achieved 3rd place again.
For most dancers, these results would already represent a lifetime achievement. Yet when speaking with Ornella and Juan David, one quickly realizes that their focus is not on what they have already accomplished but on what they can still learn and improve.
Naturally, after a 7th place and two bronze medals, the next dream becomes obvious:
The World Championship title.

Technique Meets Emotion
Juan David Vargas, originally from Cali, Colombia, brings more than fourteen years of professional tango experience to the dance floor.
Throughout his career, he has won numerous titles in Tango, Milonga, and Vals competitions in Colombia and has been a finalist at the Tango World Championship since 2016. His achievements include 6th place in Tango Escenario and consecutive 3rd-place finishes in Tango de Pista at the World Championships.
Over the years he has performed at major international tango festivals and toured extensively across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North America, and South America. As a choreographer and artistic director, he has also created and directed tango productions internationally.
Watching him, you see precision, creativity, speed, and extraordinary technical control. Throughout the show, one can see complex footwork, intricate rhythmic interpretations, and remarkable mastery, all delivered with apparent ease.
Yet despite all this brilliance, he never loses the connection to the music or to his partner.
Ornella Simonetto brings an equally impressive range of experience to the partnership. A finalist and podium finisher at the Tango World Championship, she is also an internationally respected teacher and Tango DJ.
Her sensuality, elegance, musical sensitivity, and emotional depth give the dance a warmth that immediately reaches the audience. She understands tango not only through movement, but also through music, culture, and human connection.
Together they create something rare.
Virtuosity without losing emotion.
Emotion without losing precision.
An International Couple with a Shared Vision
Colombia and Argentina. Two different countries. Two different stories. One shared passion.
Despite their achievements, they continue training, studying, researching, and challenging themselves every year. There is no sense of having arrived. Instead, there is a constant desire to become better artists, teachers, and dancers.
That mindset may be one of the most important reasons for their success.
Why Their Students Benefit
One aspect often overlooked is how much their students benefit from this continuous development.
Every lesson learned through competition, travel, teaching, and performance eventually finds its way into their classes.
Students are not learning from artists who stopped growing years ago.
They are learning from artists who are still evolving.
Every year they bring new experiences, new discoveries, and new perspectives back into their teaching.
Why Top Couples Continue Chasing the Title
People often ask why dancers who are already internationally respected continue striving for the highest title.
The answer became very clear during our conversations.
Of course, Ornella and Juan David would continue dancing without trophies.
Their passion for tango is deeper than any medal.
But titles matter.
A World Championship title creates trust and visibility. It opens doors in countries where organizers and students may not yet know the international tango scene.
It also helps artists receive recognition for the thousands of hours of training, travel, sacrifice, and dedication invested in their craft.
In many ways, a title is not only a reward for a single competition.
It is recognition of an entire life dedicated to tango.

Looking Toward the Future
With some of the dominant champions of recent years no longer competing, many people see Ornella Simonetto and Juan David Vargas as one of the strongest contenders for future World Championship titles.
Whether that prediction becomes reality remains to be seen.
But after watching the entire show, listening to both interviews, and following their development over the years, one thing feels certain:
Their story is far from finished.
And perhaps that is exactly what makes them so inspiring.
Not only where they have arrived.
But the passion with which they continue moving forward.

Después de su espectáculo en Tango Salon Stuttgart, tuve la oportunidad de volver a entrevistar a Ornella Simonetto y Juan David Vargas.
Este artículo incluye también una entrevista anterior que realicé durante las rondas clasificatorias del Mundial de Tango 2025 en Buenos Aires.
En aquel momento los resultados todavía eran inciertos. Sin embargo, gracias a mi propia experiencia en campeonatos mundiales y a muchos años observando la escena internacional del tango, ya tenía la sensación de que esta pareja llegaría muy lejos. Su conexión, musicalidad, presencia escénica y claridad artística destacaban inmediatamente.
Más tarde confirmaron esa impresión al volver a subir al podio.
Del Séptimo Puesto a Dos Medallas de Bronce
Su recorrido es inspirador.
Primero obtuvieron el séptimo puesto en el Campeonato Mundial de Tango.
Después lograron el tercer puesto.
Y nuevamente alcanzaron el tercer puesto.
Para la mayoría de los bailarines, estos resultados ya representarían el logro de toda una vida. Sin embargo, al hablar con Ornella y Juan David, uno percibe rápidamente que su atención no está puesta en lo que ya han conseguido, sino en todo lo que todavía pueden aprender y mejorar.
Naturalmente, después de un séptimo puesto y dos medallas de bronce consecutivas, el siguiente objetivo parece evidente:
El título mundial.
Técnica y Emoción
Juan David Vargas, originario de Cali, Colombia, aporta más de catorce años de experiencia profesional al tango.
A lo largo de su carrera ha ganado numerosos títulos de Tango, Milonga y Vals en Colombia y ha sido finalista del Mundial de Tango desde 2016. Entre sus logros destacan el sexto puesto en Tango Escenario y dos terceros puestos consecutivos en Tango de Pista.
También ha actuado en importantes festivales internacionales de tango y ha realizado giras por Europa, Oriente Medio, Asia y América. Como coreógrafo y director artístico ha creado y dirigido espectáculos de tango tanto en Colombia como en el extranjero.
Al verlo bailar se perciben precisión, creatividad, velocidad y un dominio técnico extraordinario. Sin embargo, nunca pierde la conexión con la música ni con su compañera.
Ornella Simonetto aporta una dimensión igualmente impresionante. Finalista y premiada en el Mundial de Tango, también es una reconocida profesora y DJ internacional.
Su sensibilidad musical, elegancia, sensualidad y profundidad emocional aportan una calidez especial a cada interpretación. Comprende el tango no sólo a través del movimiento, sino también a través de la música, la cultura y la conexión humana.
Juntos crean algo poco común:
Virtuosismo sin perder emoción.
Emoción sin perder precisión.
Y precisamente esa combinación los convierte en una de mis parejas favoritas del tango actual. No sólo por sus resultados, sino porque están bailando hoy, en este momento, en la cima de su desarrollo artístico.
Una Pareja Internacional con una Visión Compartida
Colombia y Argentina.
Dos países diferentes.
Dos historias diferentes.
Una misma pasión.
A pesar de todos sus logros, siguen estudiando, investigando, entrenando y desafiándose cada año. Nunca dan la impresión de haber llegado a la meta.
Esa mentalidad es probablemente una de las razones más importantes de su éxito.
Por Qué Sus Alumnos Se Benefician
Cada experiencia adquirida en competiciones, viajes, clases y actuaciones termina llegando a sus estudiantes.

Por Qué Siguen Buscando el Título Mundial
Muchas personas se preguntan por qué parejas ya reconocidas internacionalmente siguen buscando los primeros puestos.
La respuesta es sencilla.
Su pasión por el tango existe más allá de cualquier trofeo.

Un campeonato mundial genera confianza y visibilidad. Abre puertas en lugares donde organizadores y estudiantes todavía no conocen en profundidad el mundo del tango.

Mirando al Futuro
Con algunos de los campeones dominantes de los últimos años ya fuera de competición, muchas personas consideran a Ornella Simonetto y Juan David Vargas como una de las parejas con mayores posibilidades de alcanzar el título mundial.
Si finalmente lo consiguen o no, todavía está por verse.
Pero después de ver el espectáculo completo, escuchar ambas entrevistas y seguir su evolución durante varios años, una cosa parece segura:
Su historia está lejos de haber terminado.
Y precisamente eso la hace tan apasionante.

Nach ihrer Show im Tango Salon Stuttgart hatte ich die Gelegenheit, Ornella Simonetto und Juan David Vargas erneut zu interviewen.
Dieser Artikel enthält außerdem ein früheres Interview, das ich während der Qualifikationsrunden der Tango-Weltmeisterschaft 2025 in Buenos Aires geführt habe.
Damals standen die Ergebnisse noch nicht fest. Durch meine eigene Erfahrung bei Weltmeisterschaften und viele Jahre in der internationalen Tangoszene hatte ich jedoch bereits das Gefühl, dass dieses Paar sehr weit kommen würde. Ihre Verbindung, ihre Musikalität, ihre Bühnenpräsenz und ihre gemeinsame Vision waren sofort spürbar.
Später bestätigten sie diesen Eindruck mit einem weiteren Podestplatz.
Vom 7. Platz zu zwei Bronzemedaillen
Ihr Weg ist beeindruckend.
Zunächst erreichten sie den 7. Platz bei der Tango-Weltmeisterschaft.
Dann den 3. Platz.
Und noch einmal den 3. Platz.
Für viele Tänzer wäre das bereits die Leistung ihres Lebens. Doch wenn man mit Ornella und Juan David spricht, merkt man schnell, dass ihr Blick nicht auf dem liegt, was sie bereits erreicht haben, sondern auf dem, was sie noch lernen und entwickeln können.
Nach einem siebten Platz und zwei Bronzemedaillen erscheint das nächste Ziel ganz natürlich:
Der Weltmeistertitel.

Juan David Vargas aus Cali in Kolumbien bringt mehr als vierzehn Jahre professionelle Tangoerfahrung mit.
Er gewann zahlreiche Meisterschaften in Tango, Milonga und Vals in Kolumbien und gehört seit 2016 zu den Finalisten der Tango-Weltmeisterschaft. Zu seinen Erfolgen zählen ein sechster Platz in Tango Escenario sowie zwei dritte Plätze in Folge in Tango de Pista.
Er trat auf internationalen Festivals in Europa, Asien, dem Nahen Osten sowie Nord- und Südamerika auf. Als Choreograf und künstlerischer Leiter entwickelte und inszenierte er zahlreiche Produktionen.
Beim Tanzen beeindrucken seine Präzision, Kreativität, Geschwindigkeit und technische Brillanz. Gleichzeitig verliert er nie die Verbindung zur Musik oder zu seiner Partnerin.
Ornella Simonetto ergänzt diese Qualitäten auf besondere Weise. Als Finalistin und Podiumsplatzierte der Weltmeisterschaft, internationale Lehrerin und gefragte Tango-DJ bringt sie Eleganz, Sensibilität und emotionale Tiefe in den Tanz.
Sie versteht Tango nicht nur als Bewegung, sondern als Musik, Kultur und menschliche Begegnung.
Gemeinsam erschaffen sie etwas Seltenes:
Virtuosität ohne Verlust von Emotion.

Kolumbien und Argentinien.
